Costa Rica Raids Bank in Odebrecht, Peru Corruption Probe

Thursday, 21 February 2019 05:38 PM

SAN JOSE, Costa Rica (AP) — Costa Rica prosecutors have raided the local headquarters of Scotiabank as part of an investigation into purported bribes paid by the Brazilian company Odebrecht to Peruvian former President Alejandro Toledo.

Prosecutors say in a statement that the action sought to find information it requested from the bank four times in 2018 but was denied.

Scotiabank said Thursday that it has cooperated with authorities and will continue to do so.

Toledo was president from 2001 to 2006. Peruvian prosecutors accuse him of taking $20 million in bribes from Odebrecht in exchange for approval to build a road between Brazil and his country. He has denied wrongdoing.

Peru has been seeking his extradition from the United States.
