Allies of the United States are "apoplectic" over the news that the Obama administration is considering working with Iran to assist the government of Iraq in fighting militants overrunning their country, Liz Cheney told talk show host
Rush Limbaugh.
"The notion that somehow the Iranians have any interests in common with us is outrageous," said Cheney, who appeared with her father, former Vice President Dick Cheney, in a call-in interview on Limbaugh's show Tuesday to talk about foreign policy and to tout their new think tank,
Alliance for a Strong America.
"The talk about the fact that we might be working with the Iranians, again, just gives our allies, you know, they're apoplectic," said Liz Cheney, who worked in the State Department in the George W. Bush administration. "They don't understand what we're doing."
President Barack Obama is leaving the next American president with a task to "clean up the mess left by this administration," she said, as he has "walked away" from his many challenges.
"This president has abandoned our allies," she told Limbaugh. "He's apologized for the nation. He has appeased our enemies, and we've got to learn the lessons of that. We've got to recognize that what's happening today in Iraq, what's happening today across the rest of the Middle East, what will happen in Afghanistan if he follows through on his promise to withdraw there, are all a direct consequence of the policies he's been following."
There have been warnings since Obama took office that such policies weaken the country and invites enemy aggression, Liz Cheney said.
"If we don't learn those lessons, the next president will not, frankly, be able to get us out of the hole that we've now found ourselves in," she said. "So we do have to be very clear about cause and effect. When the [George W.] Bush administration left office, Iraq was stable."
But Obama has wanted troops out of Iraq, she said, and rejected commanders' recommendations on the ground.
The president's policy with Iraq, and other foreign and domestic issues, show he "wants to take America down a notch," Liz Cheney said. "He doesn't believe in American exceptionalism."
She continued that the group she and her father have formed will be a place where "people can come to get ammunition, frankly, to make the arguments."
Dick Cheney told Limbaugh he is concerned about Obama's trend toward isolationism, and he believes long involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan is key to protecting the United States from another 9/11-type attack.
"The key to being able to sustain that kind of effort over time in part is leadership," he said. "You need a president who will stand up and explain why it's necessary for us to continue to be on guard and to work at all of these various efforts in terms of keeping the nation safe. And, of course, you're not going to get that out of Barack Obama."
Dick Cheney also appeared on the
Hugh Hewitt program and predicted there will be another terrorist attack on the United States that will be "far deadlier than the last one. Imagine what would happen if somebody could smuggle a nuclear device, put it in a shipping container, and drive it down the Beltway outside Washington, D.C."
