Despite a new agreement to halt the violence in Ukraine, the death toll from this week's unrest has overshadowed the public relations gains Russia hoped to reap from the Sochi Winter Olympics and has sparked Western threats of sanctions.

The worsening security situation in Ukraine, combined with the West's limited influence there and in Russia, has made Russian military intervention possible after the Olympic Games end Sunday.
