Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid on Monday congratulated new British Prime Minister Liz Truss on her election victory.
Britain's Conservative Party announced earlier that Truss, currently the country's foreign secretary, has been elected as the party's new leader and thus the United Kingdom's new prime minister.
"I congratulate my new friend, a true friend of Israel, Liz Truss, who was elected prime minister of Great Britain," Lapid said, The Jerusalem Post reported.
Lapid added that Israel and the U.K. are united by a shared "commitment to freedom and a joint vision for a better future. I expect to continue working together for our countries and for our security."
The leaders forged a good working relationship as their respective country's foreign minister. They signed a strategic plan involving cybersecurity and other technological cooperation, as well as trade and defense, the Post said.
Although the U.K. publicly has supported negotiations with Iran on a new nuclear deal, sources close to Lapid have said that Truss is closer to Israel's view on the talks and understands Tehran's threat to the Jewish state.
