Israel Poll: 70 Percent Prioritize 'Eliminating Hamas'

By    |   Monday, 23 October 2023 07:58 AM EDT

An Israel Victory Project poll found that 70% of Israelis want "eliminating Hamas" to be the primary objective of Israel's planned invasion of the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.

Fifty four percent of respondents who voted for an Arab party in the last election also chose the option.

Other answerable options for the primary strategic objectives of the Israel Defense Forces received considerably less support.

Only 13% said "disarm Hamas completely" should be the foremost goal, and another 15% of respondents chose "the unconditional release of captives."

Nearly seven in 10 Israelis also agreed that a ground operation was preferable to avoiding one.

However, they were more split on who should run the Gaza Strip if Hamas is eliminated.

Twenty-four percent said Israel should run the region, and another 24% chose vaguely "new leadership in Gaza." Meanwhile, 22% think the Palestinian National Authority should run it, and 19% said some other Arab nation should.

The survey of 1,086 Israeli adults was conducted by Shlomo Filber and Zuriel Sharon of Direct Polls on Oct. 17. It has a plus or minus four percentage point margin of sampling error.
