An Islamist group posted a video purportedly showing a French citizen that it kidnapped in Algeria, and threatened to execute him if the French government doesn’t halt attacks on Islamic State in Iraq.
The group called Jund al-Khilafah has pledged allegiance to Islamic State (ISIS), Site Intel Group, a Bethesda, Md., -based analyst of Islamist organizations, said on its website. The group’s video showed the captive identifying himself and calling on the government for help. France’s Foreign Affairs Ministry said earlier that a man was kidnapped yesterday while visiting Algeria’s Tizi Ouzou region.
France has joined the U.S.-led military campaign against Islamic State, carrying out airstrikes against the group’s positions in Iraq last week and vowing further action. President Francois Hollande has said the French involvement won’t extend to sending ground troops or taking part in strikes against Islamic State in Syria.
A spokesman for the militant group, which declared a caliphate this year in parts of Iraq and Syria it has conquered, yesterday called on supporters to kill citizens of the countries that are joining the campaign against it.
