Israel Analyst: Compromise Will Allow Iran to Become Nuclear State

By    |   Thursday, 07 November 2013 05:47 AM EST

The so-called middle-ground agreement currently being negotiated between Tehran and the international community will allow Iran to eventually become a nuclear nation, according to one of Israel’s top Middle East experts.

Prof. Uzi Rabi, director of the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University, told the Jerusalem Post that an Israeli military operation against Iran’s nuclear program had been possible several years ago.

But that is no longer the case, Rabi said, declaring that “the train has left the station.” He added that Israel needs to begin thinking of ways to join with neighboring Arab states to contain a nuclear Iran.

An agreement will likely involve a timetable for inspection of Iranian atomic sites and Tehran’s agreement to decrease its uranium enrichment activities.

“Some of the sites will be open for inspection. Everything will be partial, Rabi said. “This is convenient for the Iranian and the American presidents.”

While visiting Saudi Arabia on Monday, Secretary of State John Kerry reiterated President Barack Obama’s position that “the United States will not allow Iran to acquire a nuclear weapon.”

Kerry added that that “that policy has not changed,” according to the State Department.

But in his interview with the Post, Rabi indicated that Washington’s stance has little relationship to the evolving political and military realities of the situation.

The partial nuclear deal being negotiated now is a “certified recipe for creating a nuclear Iran in the intermediate future,” Rabi warned.

Washington, he said, will seek to allay the concerns of allies — including Israel, Egypt, and the Gulf States — and try to convince them that they have not been abandoned by the United States.

Rabi said that Tehran has successfully used diplomatic forums to isolate Israel, and that Jerusalem needs to come up with a new diplomatic approach to fight back.

Despite Israel’s “war of attrition” against Tehran’s plans, “the world is allowing Iran to go nuclear,” he stated.
