Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in a recent interview expressed doubts that the Holocaust occurred, saying that "there are some signs it happened," but adding that it should "be investigated and researched."
In an interview with "60 Minutes" correspondent Leslie Stahl, Raisi was asked, "Do you believe the Holocaust happened? That 6 million Jews were slaughtered?"
Raisi replied: "Historical events should be investigated by researchers and historians. There are some signs that it happened. If so, they should allow it to be investigated and researched."
Stahl said, "So you're not sure, I'm getting that you're not sure," to which Raisi did not respond.
When asked about Israel's right to exist, Raisi said, "The people of Palestine are the reality. This is the right of the people of Palestine who were forced to leave their houses and motherland. The Americans are supporting this false regime there to take root and to be established there."
He was also asked about the Abraham Accords, which have normalized relations between Israel and several Arab countries. He said, "If a state shakes hands with the Zionist regime, then they are also an accomplice to their crimes. And they are stabbing the very idea of Palestine in the back."
Raisi also said that Iran "cannot trust the Americans" after former President Donald Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement.
"The Americans broke their promises. They did it unilaterally. They said, I am out of the deal. Now making promises is becoming meaningless," Raisi said.
"We cannot trust the Americans because of the behavior that we have already seen from them. That is why if there is no guarantee, there is no trust."
Raisi added: "The new administration in the U.S., they claim that they are different from the Trump administration. They have said it in their messages to us. But we haven't witnessed any changes in reality."
Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid responded to Raisi's comments on the Holocaust with a tweet that showed multiple pictures of Holocaust victims and survivors with the caption "some signs."
