Fearing Chinese meddling in 5G networks, the United States is urging foreign allies to stop using China-based Huawei Technologies Co. telecommunications equipment, sources told The Wall Street Journal.

"We engage with countries around the world about our concerns regarding cyber threats in telecommunications infrastructure," a U.S. official told the Journal. "As they're looking to move to 5G, we remind them of those concerns. There are additional complexities to 5G networks that make them more vulnerable to cyber attacks."

Huawei equipment is widely used in Germany, Italy, and Japan, and those countries were warned about the potential security threat. The threats are reportedly most concerning in countries where the U.S. have military bases.

The U.S. government is even weighing financial support for countries who shun Chinese equipment and develop their own.
