Amid China's protest of the Houston Rockets GM's support for Hong Kong protests, far east policy expert Gordon Chang warns on Newsmax TV that China will eventually pit U.S. businesses against the U.S.
"Beijing is going to try to weaponize American business against American interests," Chang told "Newsmax Now."
Chang pointed to the Chinese breaking ties with the Rockets over support for Hong Kong protests against communist rule and China's influence, through its aviation authority, over Cathay Pacific Airways staff that had supported protests.
"And they will do that with U.S. businesses as well," Chang told host John Bachman, adding a call for President Donald Trump to take preemptive action.
"So, it's up to President Trump to make sure that we get our businesses in a position where Beijing cannot enforce obedience on them."
China knows bottom lines, not politics, guide American businesses, making weaponizing U.S. business with China against America's own interests easier, per Chang.
"You gotta remember, business is business," he said. "It's not up to any business to define the U.S. national security interests or to implement U.S. policy.
"What it is up to is President Trump, and clearly what we need to do is to get U.S. business out of harm's way, because Beijing is going to try to weaponize American business against American interests. It did this with Cathay Pacific."
