'Game of Thrones' Editor Killed by Lion in South Africa

Wednesday, 03 June 2015 01:34 PM EDT

The American tourist who was mauled to death by a lion in South Africa has been identified as Katherine Chappell, a visual effects editor who previously worked on "Game of Thrones." She was 29.

Chappell was visiting Johannesburg's Lion Park on Monday when a lion lunged through the window of her vehicle and attacked her.

Story continues below video.

Scott Simpson, Assistant Operations Manager at the Lion Park, told the Associated Press the nine year-old lioness fatally bit Chappell in the neck after she took pictures of the animal, which was less than four feet away from the vehicle.

"They had their windows all the way down, which is strictly against policy. The lion bit the lady through the window," he said.

Chappell died of her wounds before the paramedics arrived.

The vfx editor, who also worked on "Captain America: Winter Soldier" and "Godzilla," most recently wrapped Ron Howard's "Into the Heart of the Sea," which opens later this year.

Chappell's sister Jennifer posted a tribute to her on her Facebook page: "Katie was a brilliant, kind, adventurous and high-spirited woman. Her energy and passion could not be contained by mere continents or oceans. She was very much loved and shared her love for life with those she met."
