Tuesday, 26 January 2016 01:53 PM EST

MADRID (AP) — Emergency services on the Spanish Balearic Island of Mallorca say they were called to attend a woman who appeared to have been strangled with a cellphone charger cable but were unable to save her life.

The resort island's Urgent Medical Care Service said it received a call at 3:20 a.m. Saturday from a man who said he had killed his wife in the western town of Costa de la Calma. Local police and ambulance services found a 49-year-old British woman in cardiac arrest with bruising on her neck, but were unable to resuscitate her.

The news agency Europa Press said police began an investigation and arrested a man of British nationality. The detainee will be held in custody before appearing in court Sunday or Monday.
