WARSAW, Poland (AP) — Poland's President has announced that the post of president of the Supreme Court is vacant, despite the fact that the judge in question insists her term is not over and her colleagues support her.

The court is at the heart of Poland's dispute with European Union leaders who say the government's steps threaten Poland's rule of law. The EU's top court is examining new regulations enacted by the right-wing government that force the court's judges, including its president, to retire at 65.

President Andrzej Duda, who co-authored the regulations, posted a list of vacancies at the court this week that includes the post of First President Malgorzata Gersdorf, 65.

Under Poland's Constitution Gerdorf's term runs until May 2020. She said Thursday she must abide by that and stay on.
