Norway Leader Joins 'napalm Girl' Protest against Facebook

Friday, 09 September 2016 06:04 AM EDT

COPENHAGEN, Denmark (AP) — Norway's prime minister has challenged Facebook's restrictions on nude photos by posting an iconic 1972 image of a naked girl running from an aerial napalm attack in Vietnam.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning image by Associated Press photographer Nick Ut is at the center of a heated debate about freedom of speech in Norway after Facebook deleted it from a Norwegian author's page.

Many Norwegians have posted the photo on Facebook in protest, and Prime Minister Erna Solberg joined them on Friday.

Solberg said the photo has helped shape world history and that "Facebook gets it wrong when they censor such images."

The little girl in the image, Kim Phuc, is naked and crying, her clothes and layers of skin melted away by napalm.

A Facebook spokesman for the Nordic region didn't immediately return a request for comment.
