Kosovo Opposition Disrupts Parliament Session with Tear Gas

PRISTINA, Kosovo (AP) — Kosovo opposition lawmakers opposed to government deals with Serbia and Montenegro released tear gas to disrupt a parliamentary session Thursday.

Shortly after the start of the session, Speaker Kadri Veseli suspended proceedings after a tear gas canister was opened in the opposition seats.

When session resumed half an hour later, the opposition failed to stop it despite releasing more tear gas, directing a laser light at a minister, throwing water at Prime Minister Isa Mustafa and temporarily blocking the podium. Then they left the hall.

It was the ninth such protest with tear gas by opposition lawmakers since September. They have also disrupted parliamentary sessions with pepper spray, whistles and water bottles to protest against a deal between Kosovo and Serbia giving more powers to ethnic Serbs in Kosovo. In December, the Constitutional Court ruled that the agreement needed to be amended to conform to the constitution.

The opposition also rejects a border demarcation pact with Montenegro.

Mustafa denies violating the constitution and has called on the opposition to take part at the parliamentary debate. "They have not been voted to launch tear gas at the Assembly hall but to introduce their opinion and opposition in a democratic way," he said. "This is not a democratic way."

Last month, they opposed the election of the new president in parliament and also have contested it at the Constitutional Court.
