Greece: Anarchists Evicted from Illegally Occupied Buildings

Wednesday, 27 July 2016 05:35 PM EDT

THESSALONIKI, Greece (AP) — Greek police have emptied three buildings in this northern city of illegal occupiers and made 74 arrests.

Police say they emptied the buildings, one belonging to the Greek Orthodox Church, a second to the University of Thessaloniki and the third to a private owner, evicting a total of 107 people.

The 74 arrested are self-styled anarchists or leftist militants, with several from Great Britain, Italy and Spain.

The remaining 33 were refugees who were directed to refugee camps or, if they chose so, private accommodations, police say.

In response, some activists have occupied the local offices of the ruling leftist Syriza party. The party itself condemned the police action as "contrary to the Left's principles and values."
