Germany: Alleged IS Supporter, 16, Tried in Police Stabbing

BERLIN (AP) — A 16-year-old girl has gone on trial in Germany accused of stabbing and wounding a police officer at the behest of the Islamic State group.

Federal prosecutors say the German-Moroccan dual citizen, identified only as Safia S. in line with German privacy rules, traveled to Istanbul in January hoping to reach Syria but was brought back by her mother — though not before IS members tasked her with conducting an "act of martyrdom" in Germany. The stabbing occurred in February at Hannover's main train station.

She went on trial at the Celle state court Thursday, charged with attempted murder and supporting a foreign terrorist organization. A 20-year-old German-Syrian man accused of knowing about her plans is also on trial.

Judges excluded the public from the proceedings, news agency dpa reported.
