BERLIN (AP) — A German court has sentenced a man arrested last year on suspicion that he was planning to attack a cycling race to 2½ years in prison for weapons and other offenses.

The news agency dpa says the Frankfurt state court on Monday convicted the 36-year-old defendant, a German and Turkish national identified only as Halil D. in line with German privacy rules, of unauthorized weapons and explosives possession as well as forging documents.

The man was arrested in April last year in Oberursel, near Frankfurt, on suspicion that he was plotting to attack a cycling race. Authorities seized a cache of weapons, including a pipe bomb and chemicals that can be used to make explosives, at his home.

The court dropped charges of preparing an act of violence.
