Families of Germanwings Victims Honor Unidentified Remains

Friday, 24 July 2015 02:16 PM EDT

LE VERNET, France (AP) — The families of those killed in the Germanwings plane crash have attended a memorial service in the Alpine village near where the plane went down.

Friday's ceremony in Le Vernet takes place exactly four months after the co-pilot is believed to have intentionally crashed the Airbus 320 into a nearby mountain on March 24, killing all 150 people on board. The town's sub-prefect, Patricia Willaert, estimated that 300 family members attended. Most of the dead were German and Spanish.

French prosecutors say co-pilot Andreas Lubitz locked the pilot out of the cockpit, then set the aircraft on its doomed course.

Some unidentified remains of crash victims were honored Friday after being placed in a collective grave on Thursday night.

This story has been corrected to show that remains were buried Thursday night, not Friday.
