Czech Capital Prague Bans Segway Scooters in Historic Center

Tuesday, 19 July 2016 10:16 AM EDT

PRAGUE (AP) — Prague's City Hall has agreed to completely ban Segway scooters in the city's historic center and some other parts of the Czech capital.

Numerous tourists have been riding the two-wheeled Segways on pedestrian sidewalks, walkaways and the narrow cobbled streets of Prague. Protests from locals have prompted the ban.

Prague's picturesque downtown is on the list of UNESCO's World Heritage sites and is visited by millions of tourists every year. City Hall said Tuesday the ban will also affect parts of Prague's 3rd, 4th, 7th and 8th districts, including streets and roads. It will become effective in two weeks while signs about the ban will be placed in the affected areas by Sept 1.

An association of companies providing Segway tours is considering a legal complaint against the ban.
