Acting Egyptian President Adly Mansour is calling on legal experts to begin hammering out an amended constitution.

The group of 10 experts will meet Sunday, and has 15 days to draft proposals that will then be put before a larger body that will have 60 days to pass a final draft, reports Al Arabya.

The constitution was suspended by the military earlier this month when they ousted Mohammed Morsi, the country's first elected president after just one year in office.

The current constitution was drawn up by a mostly Islamist assembly that Christians and liberals boycotted. Morsi was elected after the three-decade rule of Hosni Mubarak ended with the Arab Spring uprisings. But Morsi, with his strong ties to the Islamist Muslim Brotherhood, was criticized for reducing freedoms and increasing religious law.

The constitution is set to be voted on in a referendum, with the process expected to take four months. Once the constitution is approved, new parliamentary and presidential elections can take place.

The Muslim Brotherhood is demanding Morsi's return to office and refuses to recognize the new cabinet that was sworn in earlier this week.
