A newly published document from Edward Snowden suggests that the National Security Agency knew that Russian agents hacked into the email account of murdered journalist Anna Politkovskaya.

Politkovskaya, who was U.S.-born but grew up in Moscow, was shot dead in her apartment building in 2006. A longtime critic of the Kremlin and Russian President Vladimir Putin, her death was believed by some to be a contract killing.

Former FSB officer Alexander Litvinenko accused Putin of approving her murder two weeks before he was killed by polonium poisoning, according to BBC News.

The document, published by The Intercept, is "an internal wiki entry," from the NSA that is mostly unclassified and open to the public, except for one portion marked top secret:

"Russian Federal Intelligence Services (probably FSB) are known to have targeted the webmail account of the murdered Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya. On 5 December 2005, RFIS initiated an attack against the account annapolitkovskaia@US Provider1, deploying malicious software which is not available in the public domain. It is not known whether this attack is in any way associated with the death of the journalist."

Though the email address isn't specified, the Intercept notes that Politkovskaya was known to use [email protected], though Yahoo refused to confirm her account, telling the Intercept "we can only disclose information about a specific user account pursuant to our terms of service, privacy policy and law enforcement guidelines."

Russian President Vladimir Putin has denied any involvement in Politkovskaya's murder.
