3 Czech Parties Work for Coalition, Spending Cuts

Tuesday, 01 June 2010 10:06 AM EDT

Three center-right political parties that made a surprisingly strong showing during Czech parliamentary elections during the weekend are toiling to establish a governing coalition that is expected to propose spending cuts.

Those spending cuts are seen as being in step with the widespread European shift toward fiscal austerity, according to a report in The Wall Street Journal Tuesday.

The Civic Democrats led the three parties in gaining nearly half of the popular vote, winning a combined 118 seats in the 200-seat legislature’s lower house. The tally gives the group the largest majority since the country was created in 1993, the Journal reported.

Czech President Vaclav Klaus told reporters that the three-party center-right coalition is the best alternative to create a stable government.
