Police in Cyprus believe they have found the corpse of Tassos Papadopoulos, the former President, three months after it was stolen from his grave .
The body was discovered in a relatively new cemetery near Nicosia, a few miles from the one where it was originally buried. Police were alerted to the site by an anonymous caller.
“Acting on a tip-off, a corpse was found at a cemetery with indications so far suggesting it may belong to the former Cyprus President,” Michalis Katsounodos, a police spokesman said. DNA testing was now taking place, he added.
Relatives of Papadopoulos rushed to the cemetery when the news broke last night, and left visibly distraught, witnesses said.
The state-run Cyprus Broadcasting Corporation said police were investigating the possibility the corpse had been transferred to the cemetery in the past few days.
Papadopoulos’s body was stolen on December 11 — the eve of the first anniversary of his death — at night, and during a heavy thunderstorm.
