The writer and producer of the "Chernobyl" mini-series on HBO is warning people who visit the nuclear disaster site to be more respectful of what took place there 33 years ago.

Craig Mazin posted a note on Twitter in regard to the smiling selfies people have taken during recent visits to the site after they watched the show.

"It's wonderful that #ChernobylHBO has inspired a wave of tourism to the Zone of Exclusion. But yes, I've seen the photos going around," he wrote.

"If you visit, please remember that a terrible tragedy occurred there. Comport yourselves with respect for all who suffered and sacrificed."

On April 26, 1986, a reactor at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant near Pripyat, Ukraine exploded. The site has been uninhabited ever since because of the nuclear fallout.
