Hugo Chavez is likely to lose next week’s presidential election to his youthful opponent, Henrique Capriles Radonski. But there are indications that he will fight to hold on to power. Reports say Chavez has arranged for armed commandos, recruited from street gangs, to guard the polls in areas where support for Capriles is strong, and to take charge of transporting ballots. A stolen election, or a flat refusal to leave office in the face of defeat will bring thousands of Venezuelans into the streets to protest and throw the country into turmoil.
