Suicide Car Bomber Strikes NATO Convoy Near US Embassy in Kabul

Tuesday, 30 June 2015 06:59 AM EDT

A suicide car bomber targeted a NATO convoy about 100 meters, or about 330 feet, from the U.S. embassy in Kabul, near the center of Afghanistan’s capital.

About 20 people were killed or wounded in the attack, Sediq Siddiqi, an Interior Ministry spokesman, said by phone. At least four bodies were taken from the scene near a shopping mall, according to Tolonews, a local Afghan broadcaster.

No group has taken responsibility yet.

The bombing comes a week after Taliban militants attacked parliament while about 250 lawmakers were inside. Security forces killed the seven assailants, ending a plot that could’ve been far deadlier.

The violence has increased pressure on President Ashraf Ghani as Afghan troops take over security duties from the U.S. after more than 13 years of war. U.S. President Barack Obama ended combat operations in December and plans to remove nearly all U.S. troops by the time he leaves office in January 2017.
