Four months after it overthrew President Mohammed Morsi, the Egyptian military did something Morsi was tempted to do but never dared: shut down the popular satirical television show by Bassem Youssef — considered the Jon Stewart of Egypt. Popular support for the decision to pull the plug on Youssef is a reflection of the people’s support of the military regime and what appears to be a belief by many Egyptians that a return to autocratic rule is needed to restore order and rebuild the country’s economy.
