Cherelle Griner, the wife of WNBA star Brittney Griner, thanked President Joe Biden for meeting with her over her wife's detainment in Russia.
"I want to thank President Biden for today's meeting," Cherelle said, according to The Hill. "It was an honor to speak with him directly about the Brittney we know and love, and to thank him for the administration's efforts to secure her release."
Biden also met on Friday with the family of Paul Whelan, a former U.S. Marine who is detained in Russia. While the Biden administration says that Russia unlawfully detained both Griner and Whelan, it has not been able to get a response from Russia on the matter.
"I've felt every minute of the grueling seven months without her," the WNBA star's wife continued. "I look forward to the day my wife is back home. As my family and I continue on this journey, I'd like to thank the broad coalition of friends, leaders and supporters who continue to stand with us and advocate for Brittney's swift and safe return. Let's share a unified commitment to bringing all Americans home to their families and loved ones. Together We Are BG."
In May, the Biden administration secured the release of former Marine Trevor Reed. The government exchanged Reed for a jailed Russian national convicted in the U.S. on drug trafficking charges.
