Iran's President: Israel an Annoying 'Mosquito'

Sunday, 13 May 2012 12:04 PM EDT

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad compared a threat from Israel with that of just an annoying bug, CNN reports.

"Israel is nothing more than a mosquito which cannot see the broad horizon of the Iranian nation," he said Saturday during a visit to northeastern Iran's Khorassan province, CNN reported, quoting Iran's semi-official Fars news agency.

Ahmadinejad said talk of a possible war between Iran and Israel has prompted "regional states" -- he did not name names -- to buy billions in military gear from "arrogant and imperial powers," the state-run Islamic Republic News Agency reported. The Iranian president said there is no war on the horizon, CNN reported.

But Ahmadinejad came nowhere near saying Iran should or will embrace Israel, predicting the smaller nation could fall if regional powers cut ties -- especially if they stopped selling oil to Israelis.
