Karzai Watches as Ahmadinejad Slams U.S. in Kabul

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday accused the U.S. of playing a 'double game' in Afghanistan by fighting terrorists it once supported.

The Iranian president said terrorists are best fought not on the battlefield, but through the use of intelligence, which does not result in the deaths of troops of civilians.

Mr Ahmadinejad made his comments at a press conference in Kabul.

He was asked to respond to remarks made earlier this week by U.S. Defence Secretary Robert Gates accusing Iran of 'playing a double game' by trying to have a good relationship with the Afghan government while providing support to the Taliban.

'I believe that they themselves, are playing a double game,' Mr Ahmadinejad said.

'They themselves created terrorists and now they're saying that they are fighting terrorists.'

Mr Ahmadinejad was referring to the mujahideen, who were financed and armed by the CIA during the administrations of Presidents Carter and Reagan in the 1970s and 1980s. Tehran has said it supports the Afghan government and denies allegations that it helps the Taliban.
