The bulk of U.S. fatalities and injuries in Afghanistan have taken place since President Barack Obama took office, Breitbart reported.

Some 2,207 soldiers gave their lives in Afghanistan, though some sources put the  Afghanistan death toll at 2,350. Seventy-five percent of U.S. military fatalities in Afghanistan have taken place during the Obama administration, according to Breitbart.

Some 20,040 American soldiers have been wounded since the war began 13 years ago. Of these, 17,339 — nearly 90 percent — received their injuries during the Obama presidency.

The war began in October 2001 during the administration of George W. Bush, after al-Qaida terrorists based in Afghanistan launched attacks on the U.S. homeland.

In 2009, shortly after entering the White House, Obama conducted a comprehensive internal review of his options and decided to first augment U.S. forces, so as to stabilize a deteriorating military situation, and then to pullout, The New York Times reported at the time.

Americans have tended to support the president's plans to wind down the war but not his management of the conflict, according to a June 2014 YouGov poll.

There were no troop fatalities in October or so far in November, though 31 service members were wounded last month. About 10,000 troops are expected to remain in the country after combat operations are set to officially end next month.

By 2017, all U.S. forces will be removed except for those needed to guard the U.S. Embassy, Breitbart reported.
