Ugandan Pop Star Politician Holds 1st Concert since Jail

Saturday, 10 November 2018 01:37 PM EST

KAMPALA, Uganda (AP) — Ugandan pop star and opposition politician Bobi Wine stages his first concert since being charged with treason for his alleged role in a stone attack on the president's convoy.

Thousands of Ugandans are attending the lakeside event Saturday.

Curtain raisers offered crowd pleasers charged with anti-government messages before Wine, putting on his trademark red beret, came onstage.

Wine, whose real name is Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, performed at a private beach outside the capital, Kampala, after he was denied permission to hold the event at the national stadium.

He has been relatively quiet since returning from the U.S., where he sought specialist care for injuries he sustained during alleged torture by state agents in August.

The singer is challenging long-time President Yoweri Museveni by speaking directly to Uganda's disenchanted youth.
