Humanitarian Groups Ask for Air Access to Mali's Kidal

Wednesday, 21 October 2015 05:48 PM EDT

DAKAR, Senegal (AP) — A group of 80 humanitarian organizations are urging Mali's government and the U.N. peacekeeping mission there to allow flights to deliver aid to the northern Kidal region.

A letter signed by groups including Save the Children and Oxfam on Thursday said now that a peace accord has been signed, they would like air access to about 90,000 people in need of humanitarian assistance in the Kidal region.

Yannick Deville, president of the alliance of international organizations, said the U.N. mission has prohibited humanitarian flights to Kidal since January 2015 citing security reasons and a damaged runway.

The groups say that road deliveries put them at higher security risk than flying in supplies.

A French-led intervention pushed extremists from holding towns in northern Mali, but insecurity remains.
