EU Applauds Calm in Guinea Vote, Calls for Transparency

Tuesday, 13 October 2015 01:17 PM EDT

CONAKRY, Guinea (AP) — The European Union's observer mission in Guinea commended voters for their enthusiasm and peaceful conduct during presidential elections and called for transparency as the electoral commission finalizes the results of the first round.

Mission head Frank Engel said Tuesday that there were some logistical issues during the Oct. 11 vote, which the EU will continue to evaluate. He called for calm as the results are finalized.

Witnesses said demonstrations broke out in two of the capital's suburbs known as opposition strongholds, but they were stopped by anti-riot police.

Opposition candidates said Monday they will not accept results for Guinea's second democratic presidential election in more than 50 years, citing fraud. The government of President Alpha Conde, who is favored to win the election, denied there was fraud.
