10 Dead in Boat Collision off Guinea

Saturday, 11 October 2014 09:49 AM EDT

CONAKRY, Guinea — An official says 10 people died and a dozen were missing after a small boat collided with a ship off Guinea's southern coast and capsized.

Ali Bamba, an official in the Forecariah region where the incident occurred Saturday, said the wooden boat's motor failed and it was overcome by waves that carried it toward the ship. The small boat sank after they collided.

He said 18 people were rescued while the bodies of 10 people who died had been transferred to the Forecariah morgue.

He said there was little hope of finding the 12 missing people alive.

The region where the incident occurred has many small islands that are served by boats carrying people and goods. They are often overcrowded and fatal accidents are common.
