Double Suicide Bombing in Cameroon's North Kills at Least 10

Wednesday, 10 February 2016 01:32 PM EST

YAOUNDE, Cameroon (AP) — The governor of Cameroon's Far North region says two suicide bombers have killed at least 10 people in an attack on a northern village.

The governor, Midjiyawa Bakari, said Wednesday that the attackers are suspected to have come from Nigeria. He said that 40 people, including children, were seriously wounded after two bombers attacked people gathering for a wake in Ngechewe village. He said some have been taken by the military to hospitals in other towns for treatment.

No further details were available on the attackers, though Nigerian Islamic extremist group Boko Haram stages attacks in this region of Cameroon.

The Islamic militants began stepping up their attacks early last year on neighboring Cameroon and other countries that have supported the Nigerian military's effort to crush Boko Haram.
