A new church and mosque will be built in Abu Dhabi to honor Pope Francis and Grand Imam Dr. Ahmed Al Tayeb in honor of the pope’s historic trip to the United Arab Emirates on Monday, The National reports.
Pope Francis arrived in the UAE, where he will join hundreds of religious leaders at the Global Fraternity conference, on Monday. Al Tayeb, the Grand Imam of Al Ahzar, the leading school on Islam located in Cairo, has accompanied the Pope for much of his trip.
The National cites a tweet, which is no longer available, from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed, the Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi, saying that he and his brother, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, "have signed the foundation stone for construction of a new 'Church of Pope Francis' and 'Mosque of Sheikh Ahmad Al-Tayyeb' in Abu Dhabi. They will serve as beacons to uphold the values ​​of tolerance, moral integrity and human fraternity in the UAE."
