Ukraine Ultra-Nationalists Free Two Journalists

Tuesday, 26 August 2014 11:29 AM EDT

Two journalists working for a newspaper based in Crimea have been freed after being detained by Ukrainian radical nationalist group Right Sector in eastern Ukraine, their editor told AFP.

"They told me that they were at Zaporizhya (in southeastern Ukraine) and were buying tickets to come back to Crimea," said the editor-in-chief of the weekly Crimean Telegraph newspaper, Maria Volkonskaya.

"They just told me that they felt well, without giving any details," Volkonskaya said.

Right Sector said earlier Tuesday it had detained Yevgenia Korolyova and Maxim Vasilenko, as they were reporting from just outside the eastern Ukraine rebel hub of Donetsk.

Vasilenko, who regularly worked as a freelancer for AFP and Russia's RIA Novosti news agency and Koroleva, went missing on Sunday evening.

They had earlier covered a humiliating parade of Ukrainian prisoners-of-war through central Donetsk organized by pro-Russian rebels.

Volkonskaya said the journalists were now traveling back to the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Russia in March.

A Russian photographer who covered the conflict extensively for RIA Novosti, Andrei Stenin, has been missing since early August and Russia has opened an inquiry into his disappearance.
