Maximilian Schell, Oscar-Winning Actor From Austria, Dies at 83

VIENNA — Maximilian Schell, the Oscar-winning actor who starred in movies with Marlon Brando, Jon Voight and Robert Redford, died last night at a hospital in Innsbruck, in his home country of Austria. He was 83.

“He died as a result of protracted illness,” his agent Patricia Baumbauer said today by phone, declining to give further details.

Schell, born in Vienna on Dec. 8, 1930, won the Best Actor Academy Award for his portrayal of a defense attorney in “Judgment at Nuremberg” (1961).

His film credits also include “The Young Lions” (1958), in which he appeared with Montgomery Clift and Marlon Brando, “The Odessa File” (1974) and “A Bridge too far” (1977). He was the star of the Disney space adventure “The Black Hole” (1979) and appeared in “Deep Impact” (1998) with Morgan Freeman and Robert Duvall.
