MOSCOW — Russian investigators say a gunman opened fire in a cathedral on Sakhalin Island off the Pacific coast, killing a nun and a parishioner and wounding six others.

The federal Investigative Committee said law enforcement officers detained the man, who works as a security guard.

Concerns about security in Russia are especially high because of the Winter Olympics in Sochi, but there was no apparent connection to the games.
