Governor of Russia's Sakhalin Island Detained in Bribery Case

Wednesday, 04 March 2015 07:07 AM

The governor of Russia's far eastern island of Sakhalin has been detained in connection with a bribery case and flown to Moscow where a court will consider his formal arrest, Russia's Investigation Committee said on Wednesday.

The committee, which directly reports to President Vladimir Putin, said searches of Alexander Khoroshavin's homes, including one in Moscow, had revealed "large" sums of money, jewellery, expensive watches and phones.

The committee was incepted in 2011 by a presidential order. It has been engaged in investigation of high-profiled cases.

"The mere fact of a criminal case against statesmen of such high level confirms the state's determination to fight off corruption," the committee said in a statement.

Khoroshavin's administration was not immediately available for comment.

His term as governor expires in 2016. Citing sources, Russian media have previously reported that Khoroshavin has agreed with the Kremlin to hold an earlier governor's elections this autumn.

The case comes as Russia's two top energy giants have been engaged in a court battle over access to Gazprom for Rosneft's future liquefied natural gas plant it wants to build jointly with ExxonMobil in Sakhalin.
