Queen to Sign Historic Pledge on Gay Rights

By    |   Monday, 11 March 2013 02:50 PM EDT

England’s Queen Elizabeth will sign a historic charter that promotes gay rights and gender equality.

The Queen will address the nation in a live television broadcast after she signs the Commonwealth Charter on Monday, according to the Daily Mail.

The charter, which has been called a “21st Century Magna Carta,” states: “We are implacably opposed to all forms of discrimination, whether rooted in gender, race, color, creed, political belief, or other grounds.”

Adding the words “other grounds” was used to include homosexuality but the specific language was left out to avoid offending Commonwealth nations that have stringent anti-gay laws, the Daily Mail said.
