Russian social media is quickly turning into yet another tool for regime propaganda as allies of President Vladimir Putin work to stamp out unwanted messages sent over Twitter and VKontakte, Russia's version of Facebook.

Kremlin operatives recently attempted to disrupt opponents of its annexation of Crimea by portraying ethnic Russians in eastern Ukraine as victims, and in late April, VKontakte founder Pavel Durov was forced out as CEO.
