Some visitors who go to the private cemetery where Karl Marx is buried are balking at the $6 fee to see the gravesite of the world's foremost communist.

"There are no depths of irony, or bad taste, to which capitalists won't sink if they think they can make money out of it," Marxist Ben Gliniecki complains to the Wall Street Journal.

"Personally, I think it is disgusting."

Friends of Highgate Cemetery, the charity that maintains the Marx burial plot, has been charging a fee since the 199os to help defray the cost of the cemetery upkeep, the Journal reports.

But Gliniecki explains his anger goes farther back – to Marx's most famous work, the Communist Manifesto.

There's "no other nexus between man and man than naked self-interest, than callous 'cash payment,'" Gliniecki tells the Journal, reading from the manifesto.

The 24-year-old is part of a new generation of Marxists in Britain who are infuriated with the fee, the Journal reports.

"They do complain, and tell me Marx would be turning in his grave," Ian Dungavell of the Friends of Highgate Cemetery tells the Journal. "But I tell them, it's redistribution in action, because all the money we generate goes back into the cemetery."

The complaints aren't new, the Journal notes; in 1975, Jean Pateman founded the Friends of Highgate to take control of the decaying burial ground – and staunchly confronted any "moaning Marxists."

"She was formidable," Dungavell tells the Journal.

Pateman has died; fee-complainers have not.

"He's buried here because it's beautiful, not to make the cemetery profit," Dima Marotti, an Italian Marxist living in London, tells the Journal.

Alex Gordon, chair of the trustees of the Marx Memorial Library & Workers' School, a charity that helps look after the grave, asserts Marx might not have minded the fee.

"Marx believed that labor should be rewarded, he didn't believe that you could achieve a classless society simply by refusing to pay for things," Gordon tells the Journal. "He wasn't a hippie, let's put it like that."
