Girl Found in Greek Camp Gives Hope to McCanns

Saturday, 19 October 2013 07:06 AM EDT

LONDON — The discovery of a four-year-old blonde girl in a Roma camp in Greece has given hope to the parents of missing British girl Madeleine McCann that they will find her alive, their spokesman told a newspaper on Saturday.

Kate and Gerry McCann have been searching for their daughter since May 2007, when she vanished from their holiday apartment in Portugal's Praia da Luz resort while the couple were at dinner. Madeleine was three years old at the time.

Greek police believe the girl they found on Wednesday in the central town of Farsala was abducted at birth. With fair hair and green eyes, she does not resemble the Roma couple who claimed to be her parents, and DNA testing has shown they are not related.

The Roma couple have been arrested.

"This gives Kate and Gerry great hope that Madeleine could be found alive," a spokesman for the McCanns told the Daily Mirror newspaper.

The McCanns — who launched a global campaign to find the daughter  — launched a fresh appeal this week with a television program broadcast in Britain, Germany and the Netherlands.

British detectives said Thursday they had received more than 2,400 calls and emails after the show, while the German and Dutch broadcasts sparked hundreds of similar responses.

Detectives had published new electronic images of men they want to trace, plus a reworked timeline of events leading up to Madeleine's disappearance.

Witnesses said the men, seen "lurking" around the apartment complex before her disappearance, were speaking German or Dutch.
