40 Nations Look to Help with Syrian Refugee Flood

Tuesday, 28 October 2014 07:02 AM EDT

Foreign ministers and other representatives from 40 nations are meeting in Berlin to coordinate international support for refugees from the Syrian civil war.

There are more than 3 million Syrian refugees from the conflict, mostly in neighboring countries. Another 6 million have been displaced within Syria, making it one of the world's worst humanitarian crises.

The German Foreign Ministry said the one-day conference Tuesday will concentrate on determining what infrastructure support is needed for the countries neighboring Syria that have taken in most of the refugees, and the needs of the refugees themselves.

Guests include the head of the United Nations refugee agency, Antonio Guterres, and Lebanese Prime Minister Tammam Salam, whose country alone has at least 1.1 million Syrian refugees.
