German Prosecutors File Charges in Neo-Nazi Case

Thursday, 08 November 2012 10:37 AM EST

BERLIN — German federal prosecutors say they have charged the surviving member of small group of neo-Nazis with involvement in the murder of nine minorities and a police officer.

Prosecutors' spokesman Marcus Koehler said in a statement Thursday that Beate Zschaepe was also charged with helping found the terrorist organization and multiple other crimes. She faces a possible life in prison if convicted.

The National Socialist Underground (NSU) group is suspected of carrying out the killings between 2000 and 2007.

It was discovered last year when the other main members, Uwe Mundlos and Uwe Boenhardt, were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide after a bungled bank robbery. Zschaepe then turned herself in.

Koehler says four men were also charged with various crimes for allegedly helping the NSU, including providing the murder weapon.
