UN Libya Envoy Sees Progress in Geneva Talks

Friday, 04 September 2015 05:09 PM EDT

BERLIN (AP) — The United Nations' Libya envoy says there has been progress in two days of talks with Libya's rival factions and he's hopeful of a deal soon on a national unity government.

Envoy Bernardino Leon wants a deal by Sept. 20. He said Friday in Geneva "we really have a chance to reach a final agreement in the coming days" but cautioned that "the last mile is the most difficult one."

Libya is divided between an Islamist-backed government in Tripoli and the internationally recognized government in Tobruk.

Leon has been trying to get the parties to present candidates for prime minister and two deputies to lead a unity government. He said he has names from the Tobruk government and hopes to get Tripoli's proposals for another meeting likely next Wednesday.
