Officials: 3 Killed in Street Fighting in Southeast Turkey

Thursday, 27 August 2015 08:49 AM EDT

ANKARA, Turkey (AP) — Officials say three people were killed in street fighting between Turkish security forces and Kurdish rebels in a mainly Kurdish town in southeast Turkey.

Abdullah Zeydan, a legislator from Turkey's pro-Kurdish party, said Thursday that seven other people were injured in the fighting in the town of Yuksekova, near Turkey's borders with Iran and Iraq. An official from the Yuksekova governor's office confirmed the casualties but provided no further details.

The Dogan news agency said the fighting erupted after authorities imposed a curfew in the town late Wednesday.

More than 100 people — mostly soldiers and police — have been killed since July in renewed conflict between the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party, or PKK, and the security forces. The fighting has wrecked a 2 1/2-year-old peace process with the Kurds.
